In My Phone or On My Phone – Which is the correct one?

In the modern world, not only are smartphones ubiquitous and indispensable, but they have become a virtual extension of our hands. Visioning our lives without a phone is inconceivable. An unrelenting dilemma we face is, should we say “on my phone” or “in my phone”? Well, both prepositions “on” and “in” are correct, pivoting on the context. Eat More to Weigh Less

As paradoxical as it may appear, eating more frequently leads to a leaner, fitter body. Let's unravel the enigma. Our body adjusts the metabolic rate commensurating with the frequency of our meal intake. If we are accustomed to three heavy meals with an intervening period of 5-6 hours, our body burns the calories at a slow rate as it is conversant with the fact that the next replenishment will arrive after a long hiatus of 5-6 hours; however, should we opt for moderate meals every 3 hours, the internal metabolic mechanism changes perceptibly. When our body is well-versed with the fact that refill will arrive every 3 hours, it sees no reason to hold the calories as new nutrients will get flooded after 3 hours, ensuing improved “rest metabolism”. To explain the term for the uninitiated, “rest metabolism” is the rate at which our body burns calories when we are at rest. So, does it give us a passport for gorging on sumptuous delights after every few hours? The answer is an unequivocal...

Ways to Enhance your Spellings

Orthography, the science of spelling, can be tricky, taxing and sometimes intimidating. However, if we plan astutely, we can certainly excel in spelling. Following are a few ways to enhance our spelling: Keep a track of the difficult words: It is prudent and advisable to keep a track of the words that an individual finds difficult. Keeping all the daunting words in a single place will allow us to revise them on a regular basis in a structured way. Use mnemonics: A mnemonic is a trick used to memorize a certain bit of information. Mnemonics can be superlatively useful when we try to recollect something. They can act as referents for tough spellings. Learn Common Prefixes and Suffixes: Many English words include Greek and Latin roots and affixes. When we memorize these word parts, spelling gets easier. Aware of silent letters: We need to be acutely conscious of silent letters in a word; we need to ignore them while speaking, but include them while writing.

Adjectives: The Quintessential Parts of Speech

Every component of the Parts of Speech has its own syntactic importance. However, the overriding Parts of Speech is adjective as it adds color, tone and meaning to a sentence. Single-word adjectives, adjective phrases and clauses are a pivotal part of any sentence structure. Single-word adjectives, which come before a noun, impart more visibility on the noun by depicting what kind of an entity the noun is. Furthermore, a noun can be preceded by coordinating adjectives, two or more adjectives qualifying the same noun; coordinating adjectives add more color and meaning to a noun. Using the appropriate adjectives is of paramount importance for good writing skills as adjectives set the tone of our writing. Unlike single-word adjectives, adjective phrases and clauses come after the noun they modify. They add extra information to the noun. From a writing perspective, it is imperative to showcase adjective phrases and clauses in our writing as they bring variations in our sentence formations,...

Webster Dictionary App

A myriad of online software/websites are available for vocabulary enhancement. A few of them stand out from others. I would like to choose the online app of Webster dictionary for vocabulary enrichment. There are a few compelling reasons for picking up this dictionary over a myriad of other possible options. 1) The dictionary is a complete repository for English lexicon, including words from specialized fields, and this feature sets it apart from its competitors. 2) Each meaning of a word is accompanied by a sentence in which the particular word is used: This bolsters our vocabulary learning. 3) The dictionary app has a synonym section along with the main semantic section, which will unequivocally assist us in expanding our vocabulary range. 4 ) Additionally, the app has a quiz section, which allows us to learn new words in an intriguing way. Quiz related to words will be appealing to young people, helping them to learn new words.

Harry Potter: The Epitome of Imagination

A plethora of movies have touched the chords of my heart; however, the Harry Potter series have left an indelible mark in my mind. Penned by J.K. Rowling and produced by Sony Pictures, the 8-part collection is the quintessence of human imagination. The reason for Harry Potter being my favorite is the wild imaginative cerebration of the author, yet keeping the whole plot coherent. From mythical creatures to mind-bending magical scenes, the movies stretch beyond any limits of human thinking. Furthermore, the films put the accent on the adage “Good prevails over bad”. The antagonist, Lord Voldemort with his unbridled evil powers, failed to conquer over truth at the end.

My Eternally Favourite Teacher

An embodiment of perfection, Sabiha madam, the English teacher during my school days, is my favorite pedagogue. Not only was she my most favored, but she was also the most preferred for all my school mates. The rationale was she exuded all the possible traits that a teacher could imaginably possess. Patience, empathy, unbiasedness: these were the traits she always radiated, which set her apart from her peers, making her peerless. She always left no stones unturned when trying to elucidate confounding topics to us; she took difficult lessons and projects as a challenge rather than a stumbling block to her stellar career.
